PALETTE GENERATOR GUIDE

Color Palette Generator – Create Color Palettes from a Color or an Image

Looking for a free color palette generator? Create a matching color scheme in seconds, either from a single base color or from any picture. Choose a color harmony such as complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, tetradic, or monochromatic, and the generator builds a five-color palette that works well together. Or add an image and pull out its main colors. Copy the HEX codes, copy ready-made CSS variables, or download the palette as an image. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and there is no signup or watermark.

Palette from a Color

Start with one color you like and generate a palette around it using classic color harmonies from color theory. The base color stays in the palette and is marked, so you can see where you started.

Palette from an Image

Add a photo, logo, or design and the generator extracts its main colors as a palette. Choose between 4, 6, or 8 colors depending on how detailed you want it.

Copy, Export and Reuse

Copy a list of HEX codes, copy CSS variables for your stylesheet, or download the palette as a PNG to share or keep. Every color also shows its RGB and HSL values.

How to Generate a Color Palette Online

You do not need design software to build a color scheme. Use the online palette generator by following these simple steps.

  1. Pick your base color: Click the color box to open the color picker, or type a HEX code such as #4F46E5.
  2. Choose a color harmony: Select Complementary, Analogous, Triadic, Split-complementary, Tetradic, or Monochromatic. The palette updates right away.
  3. Try something new: Click Generate random palette to get a fresh base color and harmony for inspiration.
  4. Or build a palette from a picture: Switch to From an image, add a photo or logo, and choose how many colors you want.
  5. Copy or download: Click any color to copy its HEX code, or use Copy HEX list, Copy CSS variables, or Download PNG.

In From a color mode every harmony creates a palette of five colors. In From an image mode you choose 4, 6, or 8 colors, and images can be up to 20 MB.

Color Harmonies Explained

Color harmonies are classic ways of choosing colors from the color wheel so that they look balanced together. The generator offers six of them.

  • Complementary: Uses colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel, which creates strong contrast and a bold, energetic look.
  • Analogous: Uses colors that sit next to each other on the wheel. The result is calm, smooth, and easy on the eye.
  • Triadic: Uses three colors spaced evenly around the wheel, giving a lively palette with plenty of variety.
  • Split-complementary: Uses your color plus the two colors on either side of its complement. It keeps the contrast of a complementary palette but feels softer.
  • Tetradic: Uses four colors spaced evenly around the wheel. It is rich and varied, so it works best when one color leads and the others support it.
  • Monochromatic: Uses one hue in lighter and darker versions. It is clean, consistent, and hard to get wrong.

How the Palette from an Image Works

When you add an image, the generator looks at its pixels, groups similar colors together, and picks the most common colors that are clearly different from each other. This is why a photo of a sunset gives you warm oranges and deep blues rather than ten near-identical shades. Transparent areas of an image are ignored.

Because the result depends on what is in the picture, a busy photo may produce a palette that is dominated by large background areas. For a more focused palette, crop the image to the part you care about first.

Using Your Palette in Design and Code

  • Websites and apps: Copy CSS variables and paste them into your stylesheet to use the palette as your theme.
  • Branding and logos: Explore supporting colors that go with your main brand color.
  • Presentations and documents: Keep slides and reports visually consistent with a small, well-chosen palette.
  • Art, decor and fashion: Collect colors from a photo you love for mood boards and color planning.

A palette tells you which colors go together, but it does not check readability. When you use colors for text and backgrounds, make sure there is enough contrast between them.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Color Palettes

Find answers to common questions about generating color palettes from a color or an image.

How do I generate a color palette from one color?

Choose From a color, pick your base color with the color box or type its HEX code, and select a color harmony. The generator builds a five-color palette around your base color, and you can switch harmonies at any time.

How do I create a color palette from an image?

Switch to From an image, then upload a picture, drag it in, or paste it with Ctrl+V. The generator extracts the main colors and shows them as a palette. You can choose between 4, 6, or 8 colors.

What is a complementary color palette?

A complementary palette uses colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, such as blue and orange. The strong contrast makes each color stand out, which is great for bold designs and call-to-action buttons.

What is an analogous color palette?

An analogous palette uses colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. Because they share similar hues, they blend smoothly and feel calm and harmonious.

What is the difference between triadic and split-complementary?

A triadic palette uses three colors spaced evenly around the color wheel. A split-complementary palette uses your color and the two colors next to its opposite. Triadic is more varied and vibrant, while split-complementary keeps strong contrast with a softer feel.

What is a monochromatic palette?

A monochromatic palette uses a single hue in several lighter and darker versions. It always looks consistent and works well for clean, minimal designs.

How many colors does the palette have?

In From a color mode every harmony creates five colors. In From an image mode you can choose 4, 6, or 8 colors.

How do I use the palette in CSS?

Click Copy CSS variables and paste the result into your stylesheet. It gives you custom properties such as --color-1 and --color-2, which you can use anywhere with var(--color-1).

Can I download the palette?

Yes. Click Download PNG to save the palette as an image with the HEX code of each color. You can also copy the HEX list or the CSS variables.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is opened and read inside your browser, and it is not uploaded or stored anywhere. Your colors stay on your device too.

Which image formats are supported?

You can use JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and other image formats that your browser can open, with up to 20 MB for each image. Transparent areas are ignored when the colors are extracted.

Does the generator check if my colors are readable together?

No. The generator shows which colors go together, but it does not test text contrast. If you use two colors for text and background, check that there is enough contrast between them so the text stays easy to read.

Is this color palette generator free?

Yes. You can generate color palettes online for free, with no signup and no watermark.
